Diffusion

Today in science, we learned about diffusion through a lab activity. The purpose of this lab was to discover how a cell membrane worked. To conduct this experience, we first filled a baggie with half a teaspoon of corn startch and approximately 100 mL of water. Next, fill up a beaker with about 300 mL water and a couple squirts of iodine released from a long dropper. After preparing your lab, you have to gently drop the bag filled with your watery corn startch mixture into your iodine and water mixture. Continuing, you have to wait for about 15-20 minutes (the longer the better) before taking out your baggie and view your amazing end result. you will quickly discover that the iodine had entered the bag leaving the corn startch purple! This is because the cell membrane (your bag) is letting things through depending on their size. Due to the iodine mixture, the corn startch mixture reacted causing the corn startch to turn into a deep purple. In the end, I think our results came out great and taught us a lot.
